Scrapping for the Arts began as an experiment in alternative fund raising for local arts venues of the grassroots variety. A concept of the arts collaborative Experimental Skeleton, Inc. it at once found partners in the arts community such as Supertest, West Tampa Center for the Arts, Hampton Arts Management and Tempus Projects (in order of their participation). The basic idea is that rather than spending the time and energy on putting together a classical fund raiser, which usually involves an auction, raffle or other public event , the organizations would secure donations of recyclable metals from local businesses and individuals. Scrapping for the Arts as an organization would then pick up, transport and recycle the materials at one of the local scrap yards. Scrap yards are very efficient systems of trade that buy these commodities for cash. The yards are streamlined to accept a variety of materials based on the scrapper’s sorting methods- the better the sorting of the commodities the more the commodities are worth. If each of the participating organizations secured a steady flow of scrap from local businesses then there would be a fairly regular trickle of funds going to these organizations. The businesses that donate these commodities will in turn receive an annual receipt for the donations which can be written off according to applicable tax laws.
